German police uses Facebook to identify persons

by on Jun.13, 2011, under News

A person who can not be identified clearly by the police, usually has to go to a police office or gets visited by cops. In some German states, for instance Hamburg and Nordrhein-Westfalen, the police makes use of social networks in order to track speeders.

As a matter of fact, a German BMW Driver was caught speeding by radar and he challenged his penalty of EUR 400. This is possible, because in Germany it’s not the car’s owner who is responsible for these penalties but whoever was driving the car. However the police compared his facebook profile picture with the portrait photo they received and his lawyer was forced to revoke the contradiction, because he could not argue against his client’s own Facebook picture.

Since he deposited a photo along with his real name he delivered himself regarding data privacy, because it is legal to use his freely accessible data against him.
